Smell Natural Gas in Your Business? Here's What You Need To Do To Stay Safe

7/17/2019 (Permalink)

Explosions due to natural gas are more common than you might think, which is why you should know how to respond in the event that you hear a hissing sound or smell gas in your home. Though you may panic at the thought of a gas leak, it is important that you act fast and with extreme caution if you want to avoid a gas fire.

Types of Gas You Might Have in Your Home

You may have several different gas sources in your home, each of which uses a different type of substance. The three most common types of gases you may find in your home include the following:

• Carbon monoxide
• Carbon dioxide
• Radon

Carbon monoxide can be found in appliances that burn gas or kerosene. A malfunctioning HVAC system may also produce dangerous levels of this gas. Carbon dioxide may also come from an HVAC system. Radon is typically found in igneous rock and soil but can be found in water.

What To Do if You Suspect a Gas Leak

If you suspect a gas leak, there are certain steps you should take to prevent a gas fire. Those include the following:

1. Check the Stove. Resolving the issue may be as simple as turning off a stovetop burner. It's a common mistake: you accidentally leave a burner on after cooking or someone bumps a knob when walking by.
2. Open the Doors and Windows: Ventilation is key to avoiding a gas explosion. Open all windows and doors you can safely access to get the gas out.
3. Keep the Lights Off: Flipping a light switch could cause a spark, which may be all the gas needs to start a fire.
4. Get to Your Gas Meter: If you know where it's located, go to your meter and shut it off. You may need to use a wrench.

Ideally, if you smell gas in your business, get out as quickly as possible in case of a gas fire. Once you feel as if you are a safe distance away from the danger, call 911 and your Chesterfield, MO fire damage team.
